2 Years & 9 Weeks Later...

Some days can be pretty depressing seeing challenges students and teachers face.  I think that was one of the greatest ah-has I had being back on a campus full-time.

When I became an AP, I vividly recall meeting a student who had a "reputation".  After my first encounter with him, it was easy to see why many perceived him as challenging--throwing chairs, pushing tables, trying to hide inside a cabinet, and using language I had not expected from a student that age!  However, since I never had the opportunity to work with someone so challenging, I knew this would be an opportunity for growth and lots of learning for me, and hopefully for him too!

Over the last two years, our relationship grew to new levels.  He knew he could trust me and share anything with him.  He knew I would listen to him and help him, but he also knew when he messed up he would be held accountable.  I enjoyed learning about his passion for football and went and watched him play.  We had many football conversations and related many incidents in class to lessons learned on the football field--good thing I know a thing or 2 about football!

So fast forward 2 years and 9 weeks later--Today I had a meeting with his parents to celebrate his successes!  He is so on track--no behavior incidents and awesome grades.  It makes me so proud to see him being so successful in class and interacting with his peers in a positive way.  He has awesome teachers that are helping him succeed.  His parents are 100% behind his success as well.  He is super-smart, but this will be the first-time he will make honor roll.

So when the meeting ended, mom shared a moment with me that made me get teary-eyed.  She had made some phone calls to find out how to recognize an administrator.  She knew teachers were recognized for their outstanding efforts, but she wanted me to be recognized as well.  She said I was the first person her child had trusted.  She wanted everyone to know how I did everything I could to help her child be successful.  Mom and I were not always on the same page about her son, so that made this even more meaningful.

So when I have days that make me depressed and feel like I'm spinning my wheels but getting nowhere, I will always remember this day and the story of my special friend!

Snake Whisperers

After finally being able to sleep in, it was a bit after 9:30 when I decided to get up and shower and Kev decided to go mow the lawn.  Kole was still sound asleep!  Shortly after I got out of the shower and was finishing up in the bathroom, Kev comes in with a shovel in his hand and asks if I'll come help him catch a snake.  He then proceeded to show me that the snake was as long as the handle of his shovel.  Oh yes, let me hurry right out!  AAAHHH this is not a job for me.  I get out back and immediately stand on the chairs.  Kev said that as he was mowing by the middle flower bed he saw some scoot across the grass.  When he looked on the deck, he saw the snake on the deck floor slithering behind the furniture.  (Yes, it did freak him out at that point.)  He quickly grabbed a shovel and went to attack it, but the snake was faster than his attack.  At this point he was sure the snake was in the bushes.  My way to help (yes I could stand on the chairs) was to watch where the snake might go as he tried taking a shovel through the bushes and getting it to come out.  After a couple of minutes of being on the lookout, I decided someone else would really enjoy this job!  I ran upstairs, woke Kole up, and said Dad needed his help killing a snake.  The fastest I've ever seen him, he jumps out of bed, throws some shorts on, and rushes outdoors.  Shoes would've ben part of my getting dressed, but not his!  I stayed inside, ready to do research on catching snakes if needed!  I could hear the two of them plotting, when all of a sudden Kole runs inside and upstairs.  He comes running downstairs with his paintball gun--here I thought he was getting his shoes!  He has decided he's going to "shoot" the snake.  The problem, he only has one paint ball left.  I told him, "Well I guess you better make the shot count!"  Soon Kole goes outside and hear one of them say, "There it is on the deck."  I look out the window and see Kole lining his paintball gun up.  POW and then "I got him!"  The next thing I hear is a shovel or hoe chopping him up.  The "city slickers" as Tina and Shawn referred to them as, got the 4' snake!  I can't remember the kind of snake but it was non-poisonous.

Fast forward 10 minutes:   I'm inside making my grocery list.  The boys walk in and as Kev walks by he drops a Walmart sack on the table--it was the SNAKE'S BODY BAG!  I was furious!  Although both boys laughed, Kev did apologize.  SMART MOVE!!!

1 snake down and hopefully no more to go!  But, in case the snake whisperer's service is needed again, I guess we'll be going to get some more paintballs!

Labor Day Weekend Like No Other!

Friday, August 30, 2013:  Although Kev had to scout, Kole, Tina, and I met Kylie in Hempstead for dinner and to give her some necessities:  DVD player, water polo suit, pajama pants, chocolate chip cookies (2 containers, 1 to put in freezer, 1 to eat with roommates), and cooking sherry (read Ky's cooking post and you'll understand).  We ate Mexican food and enjoyed each other's company.  After we dropped Tina off, Kole and I went to Academy to get him new swim trunks for his weekend at the Lake with friends.

Saturday, August 31, 2013:  3:00 Kole left for Lake Conroe with bag of clothes, fishing pole & tackle box, container of chocolate chip cookies, and 12-pack of Mountain Dew with a baseball family.  Kev and I decided to go to CityCentre to try some new Mexican food (yes, I can eat Mexican food two nights in a row!) and enjoy the outside atmosphere of music and people-watching.  Food was good, but definitely no place I'd rush to go back to!  While we were sitting outside watching some swing dancing, Kev received a text from Kole saying he got hurt in his face and had lost lots of blood!  He had sent a picture, but it didn't look like a big deal.  Kev told him he'd be fine.  Once the parents had returned to the lake house from getting groceries, the dad had called apologizing.  Kev said he'd seen a picture and all looked well.  Around 7:30 he got another call from the dad saying that his eye was looking worse and there was a pool of blood in his eye now.  The dad was insistent we get him checked out.  So, we met half-way and got Kole.  We had gone less than a block and Kole asked us to pull over--he threw up everywhere!  (The dad on the way kept saying how he hoped he didn't have a detached retina.  Kole got himself so worked up over this, thinking his baseball days were over, that he threw up!)  We checked into Willowbrook Hospital at 9:17 PM.  With an eye injury they assessed him right away and moved us to the next waiting room.  We thought this was going to proceed quickly--WERE WE WRONG!  Here's what we observed in the 4 hours waiting before he was seen at 1:15 AM:

  • Candy Crush on FULL volume is very annoying!  I do think the mom was using the music to lull her child to sleep.
  • Many families use the ER as their regular DR visits.
  • Be patient when using a vending machine--I assisted 5 different families on how to use the "new, fancy soda machine."
  • Some people talk WAY TOO LOUD and don't care!  And when an officer comes and asks the parent to lower her voice, it makes NO difference!
  • If you need a blanket, someone will get you one.
  • A 2-year old who swallows a battery doesn't seem bothered at all!
  • When a mom talks about the benefits of beating her child, I did bite my tongue.  I knew the "love and logic" speech wasn't going to be effective!  Maybe I should've gotten the officer on that one too?!
  • Waiting chairs are NOT comfy!
1:15 Kole was called back.  Although the wait was brutally long, the care Kole received was top notch!  Lots of exams were conducted, including a CAT scan.  His injured eye had better vision than his uninjured eye!  CAT scan showed he had 2 orbital fractures and that he was going to have a nasty black eye.  They prescribed pain meds and said he needed to follow-up with an opthomologist by TU. With a new insurance policy beginning on 9.1.13, hospital was unsure whether the visit would be dated as 8.31 (day we checked in) or 9.1 (day was discharged).  We shall see--we either continue after meeting our deductible or we start over!  As we walked out of the ER and Kev went and got the truck, Kole said, "YES, they didn't say I couldn't play baseball!"  We got home a bit after 2:00AM and all were fast asleep!

Sunday, September 1, 2013:  9:00 AM Screaming from upstairs--"I need my pain meds filled!"  So, I did that speedy quick!  He got it in his system and was back to sleep.  Actually, we all were back to sleep!  All of Sunday was a sleeping day off and on for all of us!  I did make meatloaf and mashed potatoes, along with his favorite butterfinger dessert!  We all were in bed super early.  (Sunday really felt like we were recovering from an Iowa drive!)

Monday, September 2, 2013:  Again, we slept in, but felt soooo much better!  Kole came downstairs wearing a pirate eye-patch, so his sense of humor was back!  Kole met someone to work on a group project and drove himself.  Later he went out to Sandlot and worked the fields.

Tuesday, September 3, 2013:  Dr's appt showed no sign of damage to the eye!  He does have a follow-up visit with a surgeon on Friday the 13th to make sure the fractures have healed on their own.  If they haven't (although today's DR feels confident they will) he'll have to have surgery to fix it so his eye doesn't slip down.

And so, after reading all of this you are wondering--so what really happened?  4 boys were playing football inside, horsing around. Kole fell off a bed and landed on his back.  His buddy fell off the bed next and his foot landed on Kole's eye.  YEP!  When we asked Kole went he learned from this experience he said, "I"ll just referee the goofing off in the future."  Boys will be boys!

Color Run 3.24.13

I did it!  I ran a 5K--something I never imagined myself doing!

1.5 years ago I decided to get in shape.  I started attending a Boot Camp and faithfully attended 4 days/week for 7 months, before choosing to work out on my own.  Boot Camp proved to me that I could do the unexpected.  I learned how to run and got addicted to exercise.  Summer 2012 came and I continued to work out, getting up early so I could work out early enough to avoid the heat and humidity.  I even worked out on the beach at Galveston and Destin, Florida.  The start of the school year slowed me down a bit, but yy SEPT I was back to working out.  I even enjoyed running, something I never thought would happen.  Jan 2013 I signed up for The Color Run.  I knew if I paid for this I would be motivated to continue working out, even in the Houston COLD!  Although I didn't work out every day, most weeks I did run 3-4 times per week.  In February I upped my training by using the Couch to 10K app, which would push me a bit more.  Although I would run 3 days a week, my strength training wasn't being addressed.

This week I continued to run on MWF.  Friday night Kev and I went to pick up my race packet.  Too say the least, I was shocked when Kevin decided to register for the race as well.  Although he runs about twice a week, we'd never run together before.  We tried once, but our rhythms were way off, so continued to run on our own.  I was so excited he chose to do this, but a bit nervous also.

This morning when we woke up, the wind was blowing 20-25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph.  Although the temps were in the low 50s, with the wind it felt much colder!  We left at 7:30 for downtown.  As we were approaching I10 exit, all traffic in all lanes was STOPPED.  We couldn't see flashing lights, so unsure what was going on.  Traffic on other side of highway closed as well.  What seemed like an eternity (keep thinking we'll never make it on time) was soon over and we were on our way.  Parking downtown was easy, although standing in the line to pay to park was FREEZING (yes, both Kole--along for the "fun of it" and Kev sat in the van while I froze to pay!)  I then climbed back in the van for 10 minutes to warm up before we proceeded to the start line.

On our way to the start line, we saw lots of people really "into" this--tutus, bandanas, hats, team shirts, colored socks and tights, wigs, just about a little of everything.  Music was playing and crowds were beginning to form.  13,000 people had registered.  We made it to the start line 20 minutes before the race was to begin.  Everyone standing there was so pumped and ready to have fun.  At 9:00 the first group was off.  While we were waiting for our start, a person behind us opened their "color pack of fun" and got Kev good--good thing it was Aragon Purple!

Finally, it was our start!  We both just wanted to get out and go after being crammed in with everyone.  Took us probably1/4 of a mile before we got in our groove.  Surprisingly, our rhythm/pace was together!  We had to dodge strollers, kids, and walkers but soon we were to our first color dump--turquoise it was!  Although I had a turquoise contact for a little while, it never stung, just made the world look different!  It soon washed out of my eye.  The blue powder caked to my teeth stayed with me much longer.

Just when I was excited that I could see clearly again, I see the first challenge.  We have to run up an overpass!  Now "hill running" is not anything I had done since back in Postville Summer 2012!  I was not prepared!  Running uphill and battling the wind were two obstacles majority of the way.  Looked forward to the downhills!  After my first mile, I was on a good pace, 10:40, almost 2 minutes better than my average pace.  However, the first mile didn't involve hills!  There were 2 spots I had to walk for about 20 yards, but that's it.  The rest was my running pace.  Kev and I crossed the finish line together!  My goal was 36 minutes, but ended up being 38 minutes.  I still feel good about that time considering the hills, wind, strollers, falling children, and  all the walkers we had to weave between.

Music was going, more color was being thrown, and everyone was having a great time.  We got some water and a protein bar before locating Kole and heading home.  I'm so glad I did this, and even more excited that Kev decided to do it with me.  Although someone has challenged me to a half marathon, I'm thinking the fun 5Ks were there's no pressure, rather just to have a good time is more my speed.

Spring Break, Part 1

Seriously, DEC 16 was the last time I blogged.  WOW--I had no idea I was that far behind.  There's no way I can play catch-up, so I'll just begin with now!

Spring Break 2013 began a couple weeks ago when we were trying to plan a surprise by Kevin and Kylie up north.  As much as all of us wanted to be part of the surprise, Kole had baseball obligations and he needed to keep true to them.  The plan all fell into place and Kylie and Kevin took off at 4:00 AM Friday.  They stayed in Des Moines with Becky on FRI.  SAT Kev proceeded to Postville and Becky took Ky to Dubuque.  Although I know they are enjoying the visit, looking forward to them arriving back home WED night at 11:30.

Friday night while they were finishing up their drive, Kole was at a baseball game and I was at a visitation for our head custodian who had died of a heart attack at home the weekend before.  "Sir Charles" as I greeted him every morning at 6:00 will surely be missed.  He was at that school when I taught there.  He lived the Fiest mission statement:  Absolutely, Positively, Kids First!  He was a great mentor to several students.

Saturday Kole returned to the ball park while I dug through my school bag and tried to knock some of that out of the way!  Saturday night Jordan spent the night.

Sunday morning we were up early and on the road for a UT baseball game.  As much as I wanted to wear maroon for all the times Kole terrorized Ky at A&M, I was nice.  I thought I dressed warm enough, but was way off!  OMG--it was so windy and cold.  Even the boys were cold.  We ended up leaving after the 7th when we felt confident the Longhorns didn't need our support any more.  Per Andrea's (Bilsten/Pratt) recommendation, we went to Hopdoddy to eat.  At 3:15 there was a 30 minute wait for a table, but it was worth it.  Nummy burgers with a sign saying they got some of their meat from a ranch in Iowa.  Never really thought of Iowa as having ranches!  We were back home by 7:00.

Monday was a day of appointments for Kole--dermatologist, dentist, and orthodontist.  Good reports from all; however, it was a day Kole didn't appreciate.  He then went to practice from 6:30-10:00 and then went out to eat with a friend.  Once he got home at 10:45, I went to bed and set my alarm for 1:20 AM as Barb's flight was delayed.  Picker her up at 2:05 and was back in bed by 2:45.

This morning I enjoyed sleeping in until 9:00, started my 4th book Gone Girl, went for a run in the sun, and went out for a late lunch/early dinner with Kole before he was at the ballfield by 4:30.  I then finished up my school work (just a little to look at SUN night) and am enjoying a glass of wine while I read waiting for Kole to get home.

Wonder what part II of Spring Break will hold?

Sandy Hook Elementary

December 14, 2012 will be a day I and most of America will never forget.  Why did someone feel he needed to take the innocent lives of 20 first graders and 6 staff members, along with his mother?  It is something I will never understand.

I am so glad to hear the experts state that our schools are safer now than they ever were.  I feel that safety every day I am at school.  We have doors locked at all times and guests must "buzz the door" in order to enter the building, report directly to the office, and their ID checked through security software. Cameras are on at all times.  We have fire safety drills every month, along with intruder and dangerous weather drills throughout the year.  I do think this week's event will cause all staff and students to take the drills more seriously.

I know when I report to work on Monday, I will be looking at the building differently and thinking things through as I walk through classrooms, praying we will never be put in that situation.  As our family watched the news this weekend, Kole asked me "Mom, would you put yourself in front of a shooter to protect students?"  Again, I pray that I'm never in that situation, but if I was, I would live our mission statement:  "Absolutely, Positively, Kids First."

It is a time for our country to put a stop to violence in our country!  Too many lives are being lost senselessly.

What a Great Weekend

I had been looking forward to this weekend last weekend!  I have always loved watching our kids play in their sports.  Sometimes it isn't easy being their cheerleader when things aren't going as they had hoped.  When Ky decided she'd be playing water polo at A&M, I was thrilled knowing I'd be able to see her play often.

Saturday she played goalie first quarter of the first game, but no balls scored.  WHOOP!  She then played a variety of positions, scoring one goal in the first game and two goals in the second game.  After the second game we took her and her roommate Rachel out for dinner before heading home.  It was good to meet Rachel.  I can see why the two get along so well.  Roommates make all the difference at college since she becomes her family away from home.  We got back to Houston at around 9:00, but got to set our clocks back an hour.

Sunday morning we left around 8:00 for her 10:00 game.  Easy win against Rice.  We knew the fourth game would be the toughest as Texas State won the conference last spring.  Let's just say Texas State definitely outweighed the Aggies and it seemed like some of the bigger girls were always up against Ky.  But I must say Ky's FEISTINESS kept her even with the competition.  She NEVER gave up, even when 5 shots in a row didn't go in.  Although watching her swim the ball down the length of the pool and score was exciting, it was really exciting seeing her play so tough defensively.  She would do anything to get the ball for the Aggies, even sacrificing her body against two opponents and be submerged for what seemed like an eternity because there literally was no way out.  Aggies did go on to win, 12-9.

Love being so close to Ky that we can watch her play at anytime.  Looking forward to the spring season and hoping she gets to play some games in the midwest so her Iowa family can cheer her on as well.
