22 Years Later...

Friday was our 22nd anniversary! Seriously, how can 2 people who look so young have been married for so long?! As usual a few days before our anniversary, we checked with each other to see the status of gift giving. We learned early on--don't guess! So, rather than one person surprise the other and the other get upset because they weren't surprised with a gift, we just ask! Please don't tell me we're the only ones this has happened to! As usual, the end of the school year brings to much "to do" to think about gifts and we're okay with that. Kev knows to ALWAYS GET A CARD (we don't even ask that!) and his card to me was perfect!

Well, a romantic dinner wasn't had either. We were at a baseball game as Kole's team is in a tournament this weekend. The game was UGLY and even though it ended sooner than expected, both 22 year old newlyweds were not in a great mood due to the embarrassing loss, so we ordered pizza and had a cold beer to go with it. Exciting, huh?

We had contemplated celebrating our anniversay today, but that wasn't to happen either. Ky had a swim meet. She went on her own at 6:30 and I joined her before her first event at 8:30. It was in the upper 90s and no breeze whatsoever! Ky swam her "off" events this week to try to get times for the big invitational meet at the end of the season. SCORE--she got all her times and even looked good in her fly! Watch out Ponderosa--here she comes!

The meet ended at 2:30 and Kole's game today began at 2:00 so I zoomed over to the diamond for a continuation of a HOT afternoon. I knew how hot I was, but couldn't imagine how hot the boys were in their long pants. They ended up tying. We won't know until closer to 11:00 tonight what time they'll play on Sunday. They will play until they lose, so hope for a LONG day!

I got home a little after 4:00 and then started my next adventure. Ky had an opportunity to go to her camp this weekend to "hang and bond" with all the camp workers. It all began FRI night, but due to the swim meet and Megan's graduation party, she wasn't available until late this afternoon. Her plan was just to drive their on her own. Well, her plan and our plan weren't exactly the same. Neither Kev nor I felt comfortable with her driving 1.5 hours away on her own after being in the hot and tired, plus she's never driven there before, so we were a bit worried about her finding camp okay. Kev and I agreed that I would follow her up there to make sure she made it safely and then tomorrow she could come up on her own. So, 4:30 we left, pulled into camp at 6:00, and by 6:05 I was headed back home, pulling into the garage at 7:30.

I have at least 12 hours of grad work awaiting me (but that's to finish one class entirely and get through week 3 of class 2) so that I'm ahead and don't have to work on anything while sitting on the beaches at Cancun. Unfortunately, I'm too tired to tackle any of that tonight as the heat has worn me out. And, with the Rattlers planning on winning all day tomorrow, it looks like Monday it will be!

So, no we didn't get a chance to celebrate tonight either. I had an ice cream cone and strawberry limeade from Sonic, while Kole and Kev had Whataburger. It looks like we'll have some time together in July to celebrate 22 years!

Missy Week

Yes, Missy, this is for you!

For some odd reason, I decided this week would be "what were you thinking week?!" Seriously, since Kevin's folks left, I couldn't think of the last "real meal" I had made that counted for anything. Last week I had gotten my new cooking magazine in the mail. Although I quickly flipped through it, nothing jumped out at me. After noticing me email box needed lots of cleaning up (like who really looks at it and cares anyway besides me!) I ran across a recipe that Missy had sent me that was her all-time favorite, so I printed it out before moving it to the appropriate email folder. Then the next day at work, there were some more recipes from Missy in my work email box. I immediately printed those off and filed that email as well. (Do you see a little ANAL pattern emerging!?)

Over the weekend I decided since I was starting 2 new (and my final) classes, why not start new recipes as well! (Thereby the "what was I thinking?!) Never a fun time for the 2 youngest eaters at our house! Since Kev gets home from work before me now and usually has to get dinner started, he helped me pick which recipes we'd try. I tried 3 new ones from Missy (If I had enough time and could quickly embed them in this posting I would, but I don't, so I won't!) Kole liked 3/3 and Ky liked 2/3. Yes, Kev and I liked all 3! Tonight at dinner Ky said, "So, it's still Missy week?!"

Nesting

I remember being pregnant and near the end of the pregnancy people asking me if I started "nesting" yet? I learned that meant "getting things in order (cleaning closets never opened, etc)". Well, pre-kid days I was pretty anal about all of that so there was no need to nest.

Well, nesting has been happening the last 24 hours! The excitement of completing grad school in 5.5 weeks and official work in 2 weeks has caused me to "nest" these last 24 hours. I've gotten my house back in order and all my grad school lined up for completion. I have a mental outline of the work I need to do when work ends in 2 weeks--hardly fair, huh? I even vacuumed all the pencil shavings that I accidentally dumped out of the garbage can and all over the floor when emptying trash cans. If only all family members believed in mechanical pencils like me, that problem wouldn't exist!

I can actually see my home office desk again and realized I need to dust, but that will have to wait! Although I don't have meals in the freezer (now that would be nesting to the extreme!) I do have cookies in the freezer to last us hopefully for 5 more weeks! Missy did share with me how to end my meal freezer problem that I can't wait to partake in! WATCH OUT FAMILY!!! :)

Oh what a great feeling! What's really scary--Kylie appears to be nesting now! She'll just crack-up when reading this!

Alpharetta, Georgia

The only time someone other than Kev or I get the mail is when it is a birthday. Ky got the mail today, but came back with more for me than her. Although most of it was junk mail, there was an interesting beige colored envelope from Alpharetta, Georgia addressed to me. I opened it up and it was a graduation announcement from a former KGN student. He's going onto Auburn University, and although he knew I couldn't attend his graduation he wanted to invite me because, as Taylor phrased it, "I'm the one who got him started on the road to success!"

We all do make a difference, sometimes you just don't know it until 13 years later. I'm thinking of sending him the book "All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned In Kindergarten", but should probably include some ka-ching also. What do you think?

Ode to My 16 Year Old

Well this is the last day Kylie is 16! Where have the years gone?! So, I thought I should let her know about the last 16 years--from a mom's perspective!

First, Kylie makes me very proud. Kylie never gives up. I can so remember her trying to learn to ride a bike. When I wanted her to give up because she had no sense of balance, she still kept trying and tipping over. Agonizing months later, she did it! Although many things come easy for Ky, she does have to work at others. It's that "will do" attitude that makes me proud.

Second, Kylie has unselfish love for others. I really noticed that this year when she helped spearhead Relay For Life. Not only did she impact so many others, but she was greatly impacted herself. To this day, Kylie wants nothing--just to be with those she loves and to make a difference for others who have not been as fortunate as her.

Third, Kylie has the best self-esteem. She could care less if she wears make-up or the newest fashion statement. She wears what she's proud of--which is a reflection of her: camp, church, swimming, water polo. She loves life, not the "it" of life!

Fourth, as much as some 13 year old gets on her nerves, she loves him dearly and does care about his success. She supports him in baseball whenever she can--even going to part of a game for her 17th birthday! She says she won't miss him this summer when she's at camp for 3 weeks, but we'll see...

Fifth, she's blonde! It's so easy when Ky's had "one of those moments" to blame it on her blondeness. Some of us will be running out of blonde days soon, so I definitely appreciate recognizing those moments in others!

Sixth, she loves her friends. Unfortunately, Ky's been turned on by friends before that she thought would be friends for a lifetime. Currently I know she's found her 2 friends for a lifetime: Megan and Renee. I love that they have their great times together.

Seventh, she forgives. Even though Ky has forgiven her past best friends for their actions and distrust, she doesn't forget. Very much like her mom on that! If either of them wanted back in her life, it would be very difficult for her. That's okay.

Eighth, Kylie worships God. The decisions Kylie makes are based on her relationship with God. She sets a good example for others and has brought many others closer to Christ.

Ninth, Kylie never gives up! Tell her she can't and she'll show you she will! That attitude will get her so far in life.

Tenth, family means everything to her. How many 16 year olds are content to stay home with their family on a weekend? Kylie is as she knows those moments are rare. Game night, playing darts or cards, or catching up on NCIS on the weekend with her family is OK! She also looks so forward to the times we get together with the extended family, never once dreading going to Iowa.

Eleventh, not only does she care about others, but she cares greatly about animals as well. Early in the school year when Ky was driving to school she saw a dog get hit by a driver in front of her. She called Kev immediately to come and try to save the dog. She even called a 2nd time with the name of an emergency animal hospital that was open, which she had found out by asking others at school when she got there.

Twelfth, as much as Kylie doesn't like cheerleaders, she is the biggest cheerleader! You should see her at swim meets, always cheering the younger swimmers on. She wants everyone to feel like they've done the best they can!

Thirteenth, if you ask for help, Ky will be there. She will help where ever needed and surprise help you when you least expect it--like tonight, helping with dinner!

Fourteenth, memories are very important to Ky. She takes more pictures than I ever knew could be taken. She blogs to keep track of her memories. She likes to share memories with others for gifts.

Fifteenth, she is so stubborn! Although she still won't read the Little House on the Prairie series because I loved the series (she did that just to bug me!), her stubborness again is a character trait that will take her far.

Sixteenth (I didn't start off intending to write 16 things!), Ky is a remarkable young woman who may still be unsure what she wants out of life as far as a career (Oh, yeah, marrying someone rich!), but she is sure to live each day to the fullest and make sure at least one person smiles because of her each day. She makes me very proud to be her mom for the last 16 years and I am so glad when she pulls safely in the driveway each night. Love getting the text "here"! I hope she always knows that I am "here" for her always as well. Thank you God for the most amazing gift!

What You NEVER Heard Your Mother Say

As an opening to our pastor's serman today, he shared an email that had been flying around about things you never heard your mother say. So, I decided to share my own list of what my kids will never hear me say!

1. So, I sorted, washed, dried, and folded your laundry. Sure I'd like to put your laundry away also!
2. It would be my pleasure to bring you Chick-Fil-A lunch at least once a week during your lunch hour.
3. PLEASE, when you open the dishwasher and it's clean, just put a sticky note on it telling me to unload the dishwasher.
4. It would be my pleasure to clean your bathroom on a weekly basis!
5. It's okay if you don't want to eat your vegetables.
6. Yes, you have unlimited hours on X-Box and Facebook.
7. Keeping your bedroom clean is way under-rated.
8. No, it doesn't bother me at all to see your backpacks, athletic bags, shoes, and coats thrown on the entry floor.
9. Let me pick up KJ's deposits in the yard for you!
10. It has taken you forever to grow up!

Nothing Random About This!

YAHOO!!! I passed my principal's exam! Although I didn't get 100% (you gotta set high expectation) on it, I did better than I expected.

I have one week left of my current class, but did all that work today after the swim meet. I'm going to use the next 2 weeks until my final 2 classes begin to work on work stuff. Once May 24 comes, I will not have time for anything but those 2 classes each night.

I am so excited. There is light at the end of the tunnel and the light is getting brighter!

Random Thoughts, Part 2

Seemed like these thoughts just kept running through my mind today...

1. Why does a meal always taste so much better when someone else makes it?
2. If a school district is in a budget crisis, why is the air conditioner blowing arctic air?!
3. Why don't they make adjustable waistbands for adults like they do for kids?
4. How does a house get so dirty when no one's ever home?
5. How come having a bed made is only important to mom?
6. Why, when things are first invented is the size so big and then it eventually gets scaled down? (telephone, cars, headphones, computers)
7. Why were numbers 11 and 12 called that rather than 1teen and 2teen--just to confuse young children learning to count?
8. Why when you're driving someplace does it seem to take so long to get there but the trip seems so much shorter coming home?
9. What would happen if everybody decided to stay home just one day and not go anywhere?
10. Why do we have random thoughts?

So, you like red?

OK, in honor of Cinco de Mayo, I decided I needed to treat myself to a fajita taco at Taco Cabana's for lunch. I pull up to the drive-thru and place my order. After hearing my total, I pull up to pay. "$6.38, ma'am. By the way, you like the color red, don't you?" I guess because I was driving a red van, wearing a red jacket, digging into my red purse, and pulling out my red wallet she felt compelled to make that comment. She then proceeded to inform me that red was the romance color.

Random Thoughts

OK, I realized I haven't made time for myself lately to "destress" as Kylie calls it. So, rather than be concerned about what to blog about, how about some random thoughts.

1. Can the van thermometer really be reading 102 degrees already?
2. Eating crawfish is really disgusting!
3. Why is it important that I try to park in the same spot every day?
4. Why didn't I ever believe people when they said your metabolism rate would catch-up with you when you turned 40?
5. Sonic strawberry limeade has way too many calories!
6. How is it that an almost 17 year old thinks she has everything!
7. Am I really so bad at not wanting to acknowledge my own birthday that now not even Ky wants to celebrate hers?
8. Ex-coaches are EX for a reason! ERR! (No, this has nothing to do with my husband!)
9. Why does KJ only bark and follow me when I get home from work?
10. How many people really go through other people's garbage?
