Dear Kylie,
Well, I did it and I think I surprised you that I'd be able to complete the May Challenge. OK, I know I had to combine a few days, but for the most part, when I started I completed! Since Day 1, I've been thinking about Day 31, what would I say? First, my own words and then I'll end with a poem that seems to say it all.
My Words: As I Watch You Grow
You are a true blessing.
You have made dad and me complete.
You have a "bit" of stubborn in you, but it's a strength that will help you!
You carry the weight of the world on your heart.
You can multi-task well.
I wonder who taught you how to clean your room? I guess you're still growing in that area!
Your faith is very strong and causes me to reflect on my own.
You are low maintenance--most days!
No phoo-phoo for you--wonder if it was the brain squeezers that did you in?
Your love for others grows stronger each day.
When you know what you want, you go after it! When you're indecisive, oh no!
I could not be prouder of all you've accomplished and all that still awaits you!
I love you more today than I did yesterday.
Someone Else's Words: As I Watch You Grow
Do you know how much you mean to me?
As you grow into what you will be.
You came from within, from just beneath my heart
it's there you'll always be though your own life will now start. You're growing so fast it sends me awhirl,
With misty eyes I ask, Where's my little girl?
I know sometimes to you I seem harsh and so unfair,
But one day you will see, I taught you well because I care.
The next few years will so quickly fly,
With laughter and joy, mixed with a few tears to cry.
As you begin your growth to womanhood, this fact you must know,
You'll always be my source of pride, no matter where you go.
You must stand up tall and proud, within you feel no fear,
For all you dreams and goals, sit before you very near.
With god's love in your heart and the world by its tail,
You'll always be my winner, and victory will prevail.
For you this poem was written, with help from above, To tell you in a rhythm of your Mother's heartfelt Love!
Be Strong In All That is To Come!

Wedding Anniversary #23
Saturday was our 23rd anniverary. Where have the years gone? Although we spent a few minutes remembering that day (Kev golfing in the AM, Kev forgetting his vows he wrote, wedding at church, reception at golf course, and dance up town to find our car tied to railroad ties, and all our friends and family joining in the celebration), the majority of the day was spent getting ready for Ky's graduation and all the company coming in.
I woke up at 6:00 as usual, but stayed in bed until 7:00 before I got up and got busy: dusting baseboards, ceiling fans, and blinds! I also spent an hour in Ky's room "finishing cleaning" (see previous post as to what I discovered) and an hour organizing the office with work and personal stuff. Kevin cleaned carpets, did yard work, and was out at Sandlot with Kole dragging fields and mowing. I had a working lunch (nothing unsual) and didn't shower until 4:30--working the whole time. Kevin and I ran a couple of errands before enjoying dinner at Carraba's. We only talked about the kids once and really enjoyed our time alone as we're so busy usually that our paths cross while one is going in the door and the other out. When we got home we watched the Green Hornet, at least Kole and I did while Kevin fell asleep.
Definitely not spent like it was 23 years ago!

May Challenge: Days 29 and 31 You'll Always Be Daddy's Little Girl
May 30, 2011 (This blog entry was started May 29 but quickly interrupted by me having to go find a crib piece for dad that was in the attic while he was at Mike & Dawn's; therefore, just making one blog entry.)
Dear Kylie,
There is something special about the relationship you and your dad have. From the minute you were born, you had him wrapped around your little finger. You could do no wrong and to this day it is still true. No matter how old you get or even when you get married, you'll always be his little girl.
Remember when...
Cherish those times! I'm glad you have that special relationship.

May Challenge: Day 28 CLEAN
May 28, 2011
Dear Kylie,
I think it is safe to say, for the most part, we have agreed on most things over the past 18 years. However, the one thing that we have a varied understanding of is "clean." Your room has always been a "do not enter for fear of never making it out" room to me. And, I do know, I've nagged you more than you've cared to hear about your room. So, this past week, when I knew you were going to do a "one big clean room" day, I was thrilled! And, I must say as I walked by it last night, it did look pretty NEW!
So, this morning, when I went in to do the deep cleaning (blinds, baseboards, ceiling fan, wash curtains and comforter), I was amazed (well, not really) as to what I discovered. I've put all the "treasures" that I found that don't have a home yet in your laundry basket. They are all awaiting your return from camp to find their home. Let me list for you a few things I found:
~2 plastic hangers
~6 pencils, 2 markers, 3 pens
~bottle of GermX
~2010 Relay For Life program
~luggage tag for HR06
~2 copies of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
~Bible
~bandana
~key chain
~lap top case and sleeve
~frisbee
~goggles
~rain boots (weren't those to go to camp?)
~XMAS blanket
~3 backpacks, 1 purse, 1 athletic bag
~pair of pantyhose
~2007 Camp Cho-Yeh picture
~bikini bottom (where is the top?)
~flip flops
~hair brush
~pencil case (no, the pencils, markers, and pens weren't in there)
~4 contacts
~$100 cash (did you forget to take that to the bank?)
~2 pairs of sunglasses, 1 of which is broken
~3 containers of mints
~3 bottles of aspirin
~tennis ball
~water polo ball
~calculator
~glue stick and 2 rolls of scotch tape (hmm, aren't I always looking for those?)
~instructions for a watch
I think what is almost funnier than the above list (yes, I can laugh at it and hope you can as well) is that Dad had gone in your room earlier and said your room looked really good! I guess, when put in perspective from a week ago, he was right. I wonder what he'll say when he gets home from the cages and sees it now!
I only took one garbage bag of stuff (won't even tell you about those treasures) out. The rest is waiting for you to deal with on WED or THURS.
Hmm, I wonder what Ginny's definition of "clean" is for when you're at A&M....

May Challenge: Day 27 Water
May 27, 2011
Dear Kylie,
I think it is safe to say, you have always been drawn to water. It is your beverage of choice. Since little, you were drawn to the pool. You have always enjoyed the beach. You swam and played water polo. You were a life guard and taught swim lessons. I'm curious what it is about the water that draws you in--the calmness, yet able to "stir it up" when need be? being able to see down under? how different the color might appear? how when you're swimming intensely you can drown all else out? the friends you met? a way to cool off? the way it feels against your body?
What is it about water?
Looking forward to seeing your "water days" ahead!

I'm So Excited and I Don't Have to Hide it Anymore!
The last 6 weeks have been an emotional roller coaster and I was unsure the ride would ever end!
The week after Easter I interviewed with Crystal at Fiest, 1-1. We met for 1.5 hours and it was an amazing conversation. That was a key factor, it felt like a conversation, not an interview. She made me really think about some things that I hadn't considered--what are my personal constraints? Got home from the interview and downloaded a book to my Nook to figure it out! She was interviewing quite a few candidates for AP and hoped to narrow the list down. She'd let me know either way once her list was narrowed down.
I was contacted to come back for a 2nd interview. This interview would be with 2 groups of staff members, liaisons and CPOC. I met with each group, consisting of about 8 staff members in each group, for about 45 minutes each. What was most amazing after that round of interviews is that I could tell those 2 groups and Crystal were on the same page in regards to vision for Fiest. That was amazing to me! I left that night knowing I really wanted to work there and hoped I was someone they were looking for as well. Although Fiest has changed since I taught there 10 years ago, it still felt like home, and I was being called to go there--I just had that feeling.
Crystal had hoped they'd have a decision made by the first Friday in May; however, the process took much longer than anticipated. The "not knowing" was the hard part! Then on Friday the 13th, I got a call from Crystal offering me the position. I was elated! I could tell those I worked with and my family that I was being recommended, but Crystal wanted the Fiest staff to know before the "rest of the world". THAT WAS HARD!!! I wanted to share my exciting news but I had to hang tight until all was finalized in HR.
But today, the waiting game was over. Amy, the other new AP, and I were introduced to the Fiest Staff. It felt so good to be welcomed home! Then, sitting in on a brief A-Team meeting and learning about what was coming up, just got BUSY BRAIN going again! I felt like I had a new "spring in my step" today after my news was shared.
Although I am extremely excited, I do know it will be hard for me to drive away from ISC at the end of June for the last "curriculum coach" time. These last 10 years have been the hardest I've ever worked, but it has also been a most amazing ride! I have met wonderful people, learned tons about curriculum and myself, and worked with amazing friends. It has been a good home for me for the last 10 years, but it is now time to "relocate". I know I'll be working even harder, but am so excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.
When I shared my news with a close group of teachers today, many were excited for me to have the chance to work with Tina again. Oh, yes, that will be fun, but I'm also looking forward to learning from Crystal about leadership and "all that she is"--she's an amazing lady and I know she will make me challenge myself!
I'm so excited and I don't have to hide it! (Go ahead, sing it!)

May Challenge: Day 26 Fiest Memories
May 26, 2011
Dear Kylie,
Well with today being the big announcement day at Fiest, I thought it would be fun to think back on some Fiest memories we shared.
*Some breakfasts consisted of Ding-Dongs!
*Although I'd never home-school you, I did get to work with you in the pull-out GT in kindergarten.
*You were a ladybug in the KGN program.
*When you got to go to Iowa to surprise Grandpa Zieman when he was being sworn in as an Iowa Senator, your teachers knew how important it was that you had perfect attendance, and...
*You liked it when your grandparents came to visit and ate lunch with you.
*You enjoyed "hanging out" in mom's room after school.
*You earned all As AND perfect attendance all five years.
*You did have a run-in with a certain EMM.
*Some of your Fiest Friends you will graduate with at Falls.
*Mrs. Flores showed you teacher life "outside" of school.
*You loved razzing Mrs. Krolczyk.
It was fun having you there with me. Will you come back and visit Fiest when you're home for a break?

May Challenge: Day 25 My Wish
May 25, 2011
Dear Kylie,
Well, only a few days left of the May Challenge. Although I know you'll be able to access this blog from camp, I wanted to be sure I got this posting in before you left for Cho-Home.
Being a parent is the toughest job there is, but the most rewarding. Dad and I were blessed with you 18 years ago and we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into--seriously! However, I can honestly say there hasn't been one day that my wishes for you have changed.
I wish you happiness! You have found much happiness at camp and we hear you laugh with us, so good chance you've found happiness at home also.
I wish you peace! Sometimes others disappoint you and turn out to be not who you originally thought they were when you first met. I just hope if that happens again, that you can find peace to know that it is okay and are able to forgive and forget.
I wish you hope! Oh, girl, you have so much going for you! The world is waiting wide-open for you. You have so many dreams and I know you'll reach those dreams. Keep Dreaming!
I wish you safety! I will always worry about you a little bit when I know you're on the road. You are a great driver, it's just the others I worry about. Be safe, make good choices.
Finally, I wish you love! (Good thing your dad's not reading this or else!) Yes, you have found love with your family, friends, and Christ. I pray that one day you are able to find that special person who you can open your heart up to. It may not be for a few years and that is okay, as there is no rush. Love is patient. Some guy is going to be so lucky to find love with you--you are an amazing young woman!

May Challenge: Days 23 & 24 Family
May 24, 2011 (Guess May 23 got away from me, and I was doing so good!)
Dear Kylie,
One thing that I think makes you YOU and very unique to YOU is the importance of your family. Your family has always been very important to you ever since you were tiny. Maybe it's because you only got to see your extended family once or twice a year and you learned early on those times were far and few between.
You have always loved going to Iowa in the summer and the past couple of summers hitting Michigan as well. There are certain landmarks (AKA gas stations) that you look for to stop at on the way. Once there, you thoroughly enjoy spending time with all your relatives. It will be wierd this summer you not going along.
So, I think our Iowa visits will now change. We'll probably be going more often at Christmas. Now, it is no hidden secret that I dislike Iowa winters, but the family memories are worth it. Just hope the red van doesn't find any more snowbanks--rather create different memories!
Proud of you for the importance you place on your family. Don't forget about us while in Aggieland!

May Challenge: Day 22 Green Babies
May 22, 2011
Dear Kylie,
When you were first born, we put a silky green baby in your crib with you. It quickly became your lovey. We even went and got a second one for fear something happening to the first one. You loved your green babies and were so creative with their names, Green Baby. "I will always have my Green Baby with me no matter how old I get!" So, I wonder, does Green Baby go to camp? Does Green Baby go to A&M?

May Challenge: Day 21 Food
May 21, 2011
Dear Kylie,
When you started eating baby food out of a jar, you loved everything you tried--including vegetables! Your all-time favorite though was a chicken kind of "food". You were also a very messy eater, but you loved to eat!
When you started eating table foods, your love for everything was not the same. I guess Gerber was a better cook than me! The only way we could get you to eat things was say, "It's chicken." Even when we went to Iowa, the grandparents were trained to say we were having chicken to eat--yep, they deceived you too!
Your all-time favorite dish is Sante Fe. When we first made the recipe I called it chicken and rice (so you'd eat it) and that name stuck. I can remember both Grandma Suddendorf and Sandra trying to impress you when you were older by making their "chicken and rice." It was the traditional "chicken and rice" though rather than Sante Fe. We still chuckle over that, so I guess maybe we should've called foods by their real names!
Even to this day you are very particular about "what's in the recipe." You so look forward to new recipe nights! Maybe I should make a new recipe for each of the remaining nights you're home with us?!?

Another Chapter Closed
This has been quite a year of good-byes and none of them have been easy. Last night was the last game the Rattlers played together. I can't even keep track of how many seasons they've played together. There have been a few people who have left and new ones come aboard, but for the most part the team was pretty stable with the same players.
They played great! Devin pitched to Kole for 6 innings and then Kevin let Kole end the night by playing at second base, his all-time favorite position for inning seven. Devin threw a shut-out game, so that was prety exciting. It was pretty cool all season to see Devin always pitch to Kole. Whether they'll be a pitcher/catcher team in high school has yet to be seen.
The game ended 24 hours ago, yet I don't even recall the score, 4-0??? What I do recall was the kind words the other coach said about the Rattlers and Kevin, how proud Kevin was to shake each of the boy's hands when he gave them their trophy, and saving his favorite player for the end to award the trophy to and a HUGE hug!
A few more pictures were taken and then Kevin called for one final team meeting in the bleachers.
All the players packed up their gear, cleaned out the dugout, and met Kevin in the stands. The parents circled around them. It was here that the "tough coach Kevin" told the boys how proud he was of each of them, what a great time he had coaching them, and that he loved each and every one of them. HOWEVER, it was time for this team of 5 different high schools to play ball with boys from their own high school and form new relationships. Yes, there were many tears and it was at that moment that I think Kevin taught the boys the greatest lesson of life! The Rattlers then got in a huddle one last time to shout "1, 2, 3 Rattlers".
It is so hard to imagine right now not playing ball with these families. They've been such a big part of our family's life. But just like when we said good-bye to Ky's swim family, it will be okay. It will be exciting to meet these boys again when they compete against each other in high school.
Kole has met a friend forever through baseball. Jordan is someone who understands who Kole is and has the same passion about baseball as Kole does. Their friendship has created a special family friendship as well. Jordan and Kole, you are defintely 2 amigos!
Good-bye, Rattlers. You made Coach Kevin and each of your parents very proud. You are some fine young men!

May Challenge: Day 20 Dress-Up
May 20, 2011
Dear Kylie,
You have NEVER been a girly-girl and that's okay. You do come by it honestly. There were a few times you liked to play dress-up though.
And occasionally you did wear a dress...
But there was nothing like tonight. So glad you decided to get dressed up and go out to eat with your polo/swim friends. You looked absolutely beautiful. Getting dressed up is kinda fun, huh?
Hope tonight was one dress-up time so worth it!

May Challenge: Day 19 Sports
May 19, 2011
Dear Kylie,
Watching Kole's game tonight caused me to think about all the sports you've tried in the last 18 years. "Ball" was one of your first words you said so your dad was super-excited! Golf was the first ball sport you tried before age 2. Dad loved taking you to the range! After golf you tried out softball. This is where we met the wonderful "lady ump" that was your dad's best friend--NOT! The next ball sport you tried was volleyball which you played through middle school. The final ball sport you chose was water polo. I often wondered if that become your "ball sport" because that was one sport your dad couldn't coach you on, although he did try! Actually I think you fell in live with it due to a coach and the fact that your love for the water and a chance to be aggressive is what caused you to love water polo. Looking forward to watching you over the next 4 years!

May Challenge: Day 18--Teachers
May 18, 2011
Dear Kylie,
I've been thinking lately about the people in your life who've had an influence on you and quite possibly may have influenced you to choose education as a career. You've had several teachers who've impacted you.
I'd like to say your first influence was when you were in kindergarten and pulled out for GT. You had an awesome teacher many of those days--me!
When you were in third grade, Mrs. Flores was a big influence on you. Not only did she provide many opportunities for you academically that you found interesting, but she also took an interest in you outside of school. You even went to Splashtown with her!
In middle school, Ms. O'Donnell was a teacher you enjoyed. Really the only other teacher you tolerated in middle school was your dad! WOW--to have both of your parents be able to educate you and NOT by homeschooling! How many people can claim that? Lucky You!
In high school (your least favorite schooling experience) you've had 3 teachers that I think have influenced you the most. Mrs. Breerwood was a math teacher (can't recall if algebra or geometry), Mrs. Douglas is your economics teacher, and Mrs. Warwick is your RST teacher. Labeaux influenced you in your desire to play water polo and love that sport, so I guess she'd be considered an influence also.
You're lucky to have had good role models. Anxious for you to be that role model for others!

May Challenge Day 16: Learning to Ride a Bike
May 16, 2011
Dear Kylie,
The last few posts have been pretty serious so it is time to think funny thoughts! Watching you learn to ride a bike was a funny time for me but not for you or your dad. I guess he thought this was maybe his first "coaching of you" and it didn't work out so well at first. There was this issue called BALANCE that threw a kink into everything! I remember Tina watching you try to balance the bike, laughing and saying, "Girl I don't envy you when it comes to drivers ed!". It did take you several months before you were able to ride a bike. To this day, I can't say you "mastered" riding a bike. Good thing bike riding did not have a direct correlation to driving a car!

May Challenge: Day 16--Church Family
May 16, 2011
Dear Kylie,
As I was thinking about Sr. Recognition at church yesterday (goodness the tears came easy!) I reflected upon your years in church and can see why you consider church another family.
When we joined Cornerstone, we joined due to the young families. We wanted to meet other young families and hoped to get you into the preschool. Pastor Gail welcomed us to the church and we felt part of the Cornerstone Family right away. You LOVED the children's sermons! While others would look around, play around, even try to run around, you sat there criss-cross applesauce and would raise your hand to answer Pastor Gail's questions. Throughout the week you would remind us of her message. There were many times I told Dad you'd be a pastor when you grew up! And that all started when you were 3 or 4 years old!
You loved Sunday School and VBS. You started going to youth groups. Laura had a big influence on you and you tolerated Roger. Kelly has influenced you greatly as well. Confirmation was a powerful time for you. Your work with Liz and your faith statement were amazing!
And now here you are, about to find a new family of faith to worship with at College Station. I know it won't be the same, but you'll find some amazing opportunities by getting involved with a church there. I pray God continues to bless you and speak to you as you find your way through life.

May Challenge: Days 14 & 15--Birthday Friends
May 15, 2011
Dear Kylie
Somehow this May challenge is becoming challenging! 2 days in a row now I've had to do 2-day blogs. But this one is so worth it because I can capture your 18th birthday celebration in photos!
You had a good time with Megan, Renee, Kristen, and Carley. They came to our house around 3:30ish on May 14. You were the hostess with the mostess by providing snacks for them (chocolate chip appeatizer dip) while waiting for me to get home from the ball game. You had the clues printed out as to what we'd be doing that evening; however, you provided your guests with the full picture, not a zoomed in partial picture. Once I got home and put my tennies on, we loaded the van and were off. I thought it was funny that they still were guessing as we were on our way. Once we got close to Willowbrook, someone (I think it was Megan) even wondered if we were doing a scavenger hunt. Once we got in the mall entrance, you explained the scavenger hunt and handed out the rules with the list of things to find. They had 45 minutes to try to acquire as many points as possible since each scavenger hunt item was awarded points. Megan and Carley won the scavenger hunt!
After the scavenger hunt, we headed over to Mountasia for some serious putt-putt and go cart racing. These girls are more competitive than they let on! Renee won the go-carts and Kristen won putt-putt!
Following Mountasia we met the guys at LaHacienda for some fajitas. You have such great friends, they made sure everyone at LaHacienda knew it was your birthday!
We then came home and had birthday cake. You partiers stayed up way longer than the old foggies and how you fit 5 in a bed "temporarily", I'll never know!
This morning was SR Recognition at CUMC and I'm so glad ALL your friends got to see CUMC as they know how important your church family is to you. What a great looking group of girls!
Hope you enjoyed your 18th with your friends as much as we did. You are all a great group of girls and I can see why you are such good friends!

May Challenge: Days 12 & 13--Birthday!
May 13, 2011
Dear Kylie,
Sorry this is a day late; however, Blogger was down on May 12 for maintenance. So, I will do you birthday post a day late.
May 12 we celebrated your 18th birthday--unbelievable how fast 18 years goes by. You opened your gifts and cards before school, we went out to eat since baseball was canceled due to rain, you met Renee and Megan for ice cream, and you got a suprise birthday call from Sandy. What a birthday you had!
Since you probably don't remember your 1st birthday, thought I'd help you remember!

May Challenge: Day 11 The Eve of Your Birth
May 11, 2011
Dear Kylie,
Sorry to disappoint you, as you probably thought you were going to read about more friends. That will have to wait for another day! I thought you should know about the eve of your birth, since we are on the eve of your 18th birthday!
May 11, 1993, a Tuesday, I was at a PEO meeting at Debbie Hance's house. She used to live in Copperfield and now has 3 boys (you've met her at a ball game before). At this point you were 2 days overdue, but I was still feeling good. Shortly after I got home, 9:30ish my water broke. We grabbed the bag and got in our blue Honda. Your dad was so nervous, but drove fairly calm to the hospital. I was having a few contractions but nothing that painful. By the time we got to Houston NW hospital I was still doing great. We were admitted and then the fun began! The contractions started getting a bit more intense so I had my epidural "PAID" receipt in my purse so there'd be no controversy! Once I had my epidural, things started progressing. I'm unsure what time it was, but the DR came in and said it's time to push. 3 pushes later and you were born at 7:01 AM--7 pounds, 12.5 ounces, and 21 inches long.
And, so that began the next 18 years of our life! You have brought us so much joy and it is so hard to believe you are about to be 18 years old! I'm sure there have been many days when you've thought, "Oh, 18 when will you get here?!" But just wait, the next 4 years of your life will be some of the most exciting times and fastest times!

So I Can't Sleep
It is 12:10 AM and I cant sleep! I've been up 19 hours but not tired? What is going on? Could it be busy brain again? Let's see--signed Kole up for drivers Ed, proudly watched Ky accept a scholarship in a room of people I highly respect, watched the Rattlers pull off an amazing victory with Kole getting an amazing hit, thinking about the planning still needing done for Ky's 18th birthday this weekend, or thinking about summer plans that cant be made yet while waiting on a few details. Thinking about all that makes me tired--come on sleep!

May Challenge: Day 10 Best Friend #3
May 10, 2011
Dear Kylie,
While at Fiest, you met Ashley. If I remember correctly you were in Mrs. Flores' class together in third grade. You seemed to hit it off right away. When we were looking for a new home, there was one for sale right next to them that we looked at. Both you girls were hoping we'd choose that home!
It seemed like once we moved to Copper Village, you two were inseparable. If she wasn't at our house, you were at hers. Their family became second to ours. When they'd go to Oklahoma, we'd watch their dogs. When we were gone, they'd watch KJ. When the hurricane came, we went with them to Dallas and stayed at relatives with them.
And then high school came and all the drama that goes with high school. Swimming was your focus and cheer was hers. Unfortunately it became too difficult for each of you to pursue your own interests and maintain a friendship. Hurtful comments were made which severed the ties. And, unfortunately, there was no going back.
I still hope that time will heal the wounds and both of you at some point (it may even be at A&M) will be able to say, "Sorry" and move on. Real friendship like that doesn't come often in life. Yes, friendships change, but we all change at times, and learning how to deal with that change is a forever life learning experience.
Girl, the one thing about you is that you wear your heart heavy with you at all times. That's not a bad thing at all as it shows your compassion. I sometimes wonder, do you protect your heart by not letting others get close to it for fear of being hurt?

May Challenge: Day 9 Best Friend #2
May 9, 2011
Dear Kylie,
Although Warren is a good family friend, you didn't get a chance to see him as often as you would have liked just because we lived about 30 minutes from each other. It was important to me to help you find friends in the neighborhood. At age 3, what was I thinking? So whenever possible, and almost every day after work, we would walk to the Park Falls Park. You loved it there with all the equipment and sand. Soon we noticed another girl and her mom would always be there in the afternoon as well. We soon learned that she lived only a block from us. You and Megan hit it off! You would do everything together. She even helped cheer at the Hamilton sporting events (you both were only 3) and wore black and gold--so cute! You both loved watching the Olsen Twins on TV. You carried it to the extreme though, trying to be Mary Kate and Ashley! You would try to dress alike each day. You even tried to trick us moms into pretending to be each other! One summer you two went to Sea World camp together and stayed with Megan's grandparents. Just as you were a part of her family, Megan was a part of ours.
It seemed like you'd be friends forever. I think at one time you even planned on rooming together in college. But as we've learned in life, sometimes friendships change. I don't recall anything "BIG" happening with this friendship, rather it was more like you both got involved in your interests that took up a lot of time. It was through that friendship you learned a lot--how to politely say "no thank you" to foods you didn't like, spending the night away from parents, how to tolerate/enjoy a "big" sister, how to be creative and just hang out. The "Mary Kate and Ashley Days" were good days!

Mom's Day 2011
All week I've been wondering how today was going to go. I went from making big plans to be gone for the day to changing my mind and staying home. I was worried today would be tough for Kevin and it was. Not being able to call his mom was very hard for him. He didn't even make it through church, rather left and came back and got us when it was over.
After church we went to Smashburger. OK, nothing fancy, but awesome burgers! Once we got home, Kevin and Kole built his mousetrap racecar. Even though the day before I took Kole to Sears to get all the parts, they re-used parts from Ky's mousetrap car to create a UT version. If there were "mixed words" I didn't hear them! Ky and I were busy working on some projects. My "creative" side came out in something I'm sharing with the model teachers in a week--can't wait!
Then it was time for my gift--give me 2 hours of everyone's time to clean the house! A clean house makes me happy, so today is all about making mom happy! No complaining and we were done in about an hour. I think only 3 garbage bags (not telling you how many came from Ky's room that she'd been working on all week) but it looks so much better.
Just got off the phone wishing my mom a happy day! Always good to hear her voice, rather than just an email or text.
Happy Mother's Day to all!

May Challenge: Day 8--Best Friend #1
May 8, 2011
Dear Kylie,
It was sitting at the crawfish boil yesterday, that I got my idea for the next couple of blogs--friends! Your very first best friend was Warren! Dad and I were good friends with Warren's parents, as Dad and Miss Holly used to work together. Warren was born the DEC after you. When we'd get together, you would do what babies do--stare at each other and play with toys. But the "untypical" thing you did was interact with each other early on. Most young children parallel play, but not you and Warren. You loved parks together and being outside.
However, when Warren was 2 (maybe 3) years old, he was diagnosed with cancer. We were in Iowa when we got the devastating news. Being that seriously sick was not something easy for any age to understand. We spent many days down at MD Anderson. You loved to go to the recreation room with him. Nothing slowed you two down. You were the best of buddies!
Thankfully, Warren survived cancer and is going strong today. I sometimes wonder if it was that early experience of seeing him so sick and all the visits to the hospital helped make you who you are--compassionate and caring about others (unless it's someone who's really made you mad--no compassion then!)
Still makes me sad that you had to learn about cancer at such an early age, but yet it was that experience that made you so passionate about RFL and the impact you have on others. Way to go!

Way to go!

Gold Glove Results
I've been so caught-up on trying to meet my May Challenge that I forgot to blog about Kole's Gold Glove results--he made it! We weren't supposed to find out until TU night; however, by Monday evening the results were posted on the website with Kole's name listed on the roster! So proud of him!!! He can't wait for the first practice. I'm thinking I might need to take him though, as I don't know if his coach for the last 10 years will be okay watching someone else coach him baseball. This could be quite a learning experience for all of us!
Anxious for the ball schedule to come up so we can make summer plans--Iowa/Michigan vacation and driver's ed are 2 priorities we need to get scheduled. So much to do in the month of May!

May Challenge: Day 7 Crawfish
May 7, 2011
Dear Kylie,
With the crawfish boil in our cul-de-sac this weekend, it brings back a huge memory! When you were a preschooler and we still lived on Park Falls, Billy Bob had a crawfish boil for those on the street. Well, you were fascinated with the crawfish, not the boiled ones, but the live ones! Billy Bob would let some live ones loose and you were after them and tried to pick them up, giggling the entire time! Yes, you grossed me out. But to Dad, "That's my girl!" Everyone laughed and thought you were hilarious.
Now 14ish some years later, you can't even stand to look at the crawfish dead! You are disgusted by the smell and look of them, while Renee sits right next to you eating them. Oh my, how you've changed!
Hmmm, I wonder how many other changes we'll notice over the next few years? I feel 100% confident in knowing 4 things will never change--your love for your family, your love for your friends, your love for Camp Cho-Yeh, and your love for God. I believe in change and think change is good; however, I'm glad to know these things will never change! They make you who you are--one unique Kylie Jene!

May Challenge: Day 6 "No Nap"
May 6, 2011
Dear Kylie,
You grew up loving to read. One of your favorite books was No Nap. The main character in the story is a little girl named Susie. Since you didn't like to take naps, when we read the book to you the main character suddenly became Kylie! You loved that book! You brought the character to life by telling us at nap time, "no nap!" Even at age 3, you had a sense of humor!
Funny how now you might say, "yes, nap!"

May Challenge: Day 5 Lane Ropes
May 5, 2011
Dear Kylie,
It seems fitting that as you are off to give a 2 year old swim lessons, I should recall your first swimming experiences. I don't recall taking you to the pool as a newborn, but the first summer after you turned one we went to the pool often. We could walk to the Park Falls pool from our house, so we would push you in the stroller or pull you in the wagon to the pool. You didn't really care for the baby pool, but rather would enjoy being in the big pool and jumping off the side into either dad's or my arms. "Again, again!" you'd cry!
During the summers when you were 2 & 3, you also loved going to the pool. You just couldn't get enough of it. We made you "practice" swimming before we'd let you play. You really didn't seem to care!
When you turned 4 we put you on the Copperfield Dolphins swim tean. You had time trials at the Autumn Laurel pool. You had to swim a 25 freestyle. Oh girl, your tears were big as you were pulling on the lane rope to help you. Your dad kept saying, "Why did we do this?" and wasn't the most encouraging at that moment in time. You did drop time as the season went on and were able to swim a 25 without the assistance of the lane ropes by the end of the season. You even thought it was fun--so began the next 14 years of our lives!
So, as you give lessons this May, remember where you began!

May Challenge Day 4: Buzzzzz
May 4, 2011 (Day 4)
Dear Kylie,
I'm sure you remember the bumble bee days. Even though you were only 3.5 years old, you and your Aunt Amy had the "bumble bee" thing going. She drove a yellow car and you thought that was so funny, hence you both started "buzzing" each other whenever you saw each other. You had bumble bee slippers and even wore a bumble bee costume one Halloween. You also had a cute bumblee bee top that you wore (at least I thought it was cute) along with a bumblee bee purse to accessorize your outfit. You were styling!

May Challenge: Day 3 Airport Scare
May 4, 2011 (1 day late on challenge of day 3)
Dear Kylie,
When you were about two years old, Grandma Zieman flew Great Grandma and Grandpa Overland down to Houston to see you and see where we lived. They spent a long weekend with us. When it was time to go back you and I took them to the airport. At that time, those who didn't fly could go back to the gate and wait with the passengers. At the gate we were waiting at they had a mini-slide for young children to play on while waiting. You were having a great time going up and down the slide until one time when you were at the top of the slide and fell backwards. Bang, your head hit the concrete floor pretty hard and you were out cold. I was screaming frantically. By the time a DR got there you started to come to, but you had a huge knot on your head and your eyes were quite "iffy." At that time, there was an after hours care facility right by the airport and since this was the weekend, we headed that way. The DR told me the most important thing I could do was make sure you didn't fall asleep. So, off flew Grandma and your great-grandparents (I'm sure feeling very uncertain about what was happening.) and I put you in the car seat singing songs with you so you wouldn't dose. So, I kept an eye on you in the rear view mirror and sang to you as you were in no mood to sing with me. Your head did bob but you didn't fall asleep. Once we got there, the DR checked you over and asked us to wake you every 2 hours at night. We didn't sleep that night, rather was at your bedside and making sure you were breathing.
So, girl, don't go climbing any slides at A&M and falling backwards!

May Challenge, Day 2: Brain Squeezers
May 2, 2011
Dear Kylie,
Although your parents and every family member thought you were adorable, it only took one comment by a person in Wal-Mart to make me take action--"Oh, what a cute baby. Is it a boy or a girl?" You see blondie, you were BALD until almost 2 years old! It was time to pull out the "brain squeezers" as your dad called them. Basically, just loose elastic headbands to identify you as a girl!
It is good to know that 18 years later, no brain cells were damaged by wearing them! You are a very smart lady--proud of you!

May Challenge
I've decided that for the month of May, each day I'm going to post something about Kylie. (Her baby book is basically empty--have the pix, just can't get it together and not worrying about it!) So many young moms blog about their child's month birthday, so I'm going to try to capture the past 18 years in one month!
Day 1:
Dear Kylie,
You would never guess it now, but when you were born, your dad was the most cautious driver! When we left the hospital, I sat in the back seat of our blue Honda (sound familiar, ours was light blue though) with you snug in your car seat. Your dad never got close to the speed limit and he would slow way down in anticipation of a possible yellow light. (I know you're laughing now because Dad is certainly not that driver 18 years later!)
But you see, that was one of the first ways we began protecting you! Now, when we ask you to text us to "check in" when you've made your driving destination is another way for us to protect you. If we don't hear from you, we'll be out finding you! We know those days are limited as we won't make you text us when you're at camp and good grief you know we won't be able to stay up your college hours! Even when you're OUR age, we will still try to protect you.

Emotional Vomit
Well, Kole had Gold Glove baseball try-outs this afternoon. It started at 4:00 and ended at 7:30. Poor guy was soooo nervous, which made both Kevin and me nervous. Other than 7th grade basketball, he's never tried out for anyone but Kevin.
First he and the 30 others trying out had to run a 60 yard dash. "Dash" is the key word. He did run his fastest time, just not as fast as others. But he knew that going in. They then watched them throw the ball. He did fine there. Next they did outfield (good), infield at shortstop (made 2/3 of plays), and caught for pitchers (did fine). He then went to hitting in the cages, off a live arm (1 hit to 2nd and caught, 2nd hit to right field for a single--so that was great!), and then played defense at 2nd. He had 2 amazing plays. In fact a high school player behind us said, "No, way, who is that kid! Get him out of here!" The last thing he had to do was throw from home to 2nd in his shin guards. There was one catcher who was 1 tenth of a second faster on his throws, the other 3 catchers all threw the same time within 100th of a second.
So, now it's the waiting game. They post the results on the web by TU night. Kole knows he did his best, so that's all that matters!
I think they should close try-outs to parents so that we don't have to experience the emotional vomit! It was torture!

Sadness
It seems like 2011 has started off with so much sadness. First, Max is taken from us unexpectedly. Just wasn't prepared for that, but unsure if one ever could be. Then my mom falls and injures her shoulder. Felt helpless being that far away, again sad for her pain. A member from our church dies after battling cancer. I used to work with her at Fiest, so it was extra sad to see her die. Then this morning in church, to see her husband so sad made me extra sad. Just a few weeks ago I learned of a kindergarten teacher in the district who is the kindest person there is has just been diagnosed with a rare type of lung cancer, although her doctor seems optimistic at MD Anderson! Then, this past Friday (why is it things happen on FRI!) I find out that a dear family friend back home whom I've know for as far back as I have a memory was admitted to the hospital to learn he had diabetes. The DRs also discovered a blood clot in his leg that then moved to his heart. He is now fighting for his life. It is so sad. I just can't seem to understand why all this sadness right now...
And now it is May--the final month Kylie will be home with us before she graduates, heads off to camp, and then Aggieland in August. Although I am a little sad, I am very excited for her and her future. She is so ready to conquer the world--I just hope the world is ready for her! I know she is so ready for this next chapter of her life, just wondering if we're ready for her to be gone?
I need to try to take the sadness of 2011 that has hit so many people I care about and try my hardest to put it in the same perspective as Kylie. Max and Brenda had wonderful lives and lived their lives to the fullest--that's happy! Mom and Ann have taken their pain and fought through it, not letting the pain win--that's happy! Cloy has a wonderful wife, 3 beautiful children and their spouses, and grandchildren who have experienced his wonderful laugh and constant smile. If it's God's will to for him to join Max and Brenda in heaven, then he too has lived a great life, although too short.
Even in the midst of sadness, there is so much to be happy for!
